Now comes a report that Fiat and PSA Peugeot-Citroen are considering merging with the help of French president Nicolas Sarkozy and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. Italian business newspaper Milano Finanza reported over the weekend that Berlusconi’s office had spoken with Sarkozy’s office regarding a potential tie-up between the two manufacturers. Berlusconi’s office has been considering following the lead of France and Sweden by offering some financial aide to domestic automakers. John Elkann, chairman of IFI, Fiat’s controlling shareholder, will meet with Berlusconi on Wednesday for an undisclosed purpose. The Italian paper suggested that the meeting could discuss a French-Italian merger. The two automakers have had joint-ventures in the commercial vehicle and minivan segments, but both compete heavily in the small car market. Combined, Fiat, Peugeot and Citroen produced 6.2 million vehicles last year, about the same number as Volkswagen and Rena

7 Vote(s)

Team Donut King is in the process of preparing a second Nissan R35 GT-R for race duties. GTRBlog.com owner and operator Kris was recently on hand to capture the progress. Team Donut King campaigned its first GT-R in this year’s Targa Tasmania; the newest addition to the team is expected to hit the track early next year. The same bright pink hue will adorn the shell of the new car while various modifications will prepare the car for production class racing. A full roll-cage is the most obvious alteration, aside from that paint scheme, but the GT-R will also receive upgraded brake rotors and pads, Toyo Proxes R888 20″ tyres, a new exhust system, Sparco racing seats and retuned ECU. As you can see, the interior has been completely stripped and apart from the dash, not much of it will go back in when the car is completed. This should make for some serious weight savings when you consider that the factory R35 is quite plush inside and comfort generally equals weight. Owner/driver

6 Vote(s)

I doubt they would pull-out of MotoGP. Problem with motorsports is that there is little evidence that winning on the track really sells cars like Civics and Accords. It makes sense for Ferrari and Porsche when their winning, but ROI involved is unrealistic for most manufacturers. It comes down to how much input of money they put into the sport versus how much they get out. Its estimated that Honda spent over $5 billion in F1 during its recent tenure, the opportunity cost of that money could have been better spent investing new technologies like hybrids, diesels, HCCI, etc. (how many NSXs could it have brought to the market). Billions of dollars gets you pretty far in traditional marketing as well- how many Superbowl ads or World Cup ads would that money have paid for?. Now you think about this economy. 2009 is going to be much worse then 2008. Recovery isn't expected until late 2011. Its probably the absolute worst time to be in motorsports right now, it might be better

7 Vote(s)

Over the course of its 18 races, several drivers and teams had noteworthy performances, with the championship ultimately being decided in the final corner of the final lap of the final race. Those who watched that the race in Brazil will undoubtedly remember the heartbreak of Felipe Massa's family and the jubilation of Lewis Hamilton's girlfriend. While some were quick to blame Timo Glock for his amazing reduction in pace into that final turn, others rightly know that a championship is about the whole season and not just one race. And what a season it was. For some it was the realization of the promise that Lewis Hamilton showed in his rookie season before his inexplicable late-season collapse last year. For others it was pure devastation at seeing Felipe Massa rise to his own prominence at Ferrari only to see mid-season mistakes rob him of crucial points and ultimately the championship.
Although it's widely agreed upon that the electrification of the automobile will be the future of four-wheel motoring, there is still a raging debate about how to charge future EVs. However, a group of Israeli engineers may have discovered the solution in the form of a power-generating road. The system works by implanting tiny piezoelectric crystals into the asphalt, which created power when driven over. The engineers claim that 1km stretch of asphalt equipped with the power-generating system would create enough electricity to power eight electric vehicles. Moreover, the Environmental Transport Association says that if every British motorway was equipped with the technology, there would be enough electricity generated to power 34,500 EVs. That being said, the technology is still a long way from seeing wide-spread use. The engineers will begin testing the ‘electric road' next month, but, if the technology proves viable, it could be a simple and efficient way to power the EVs of t

7 Vote(s)

The Department of the Treasury announced on Friday morning that it will step in to help the Big Three. Without immediate government funding, Chrysler and GM would be forced to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, a move that would likely spin both companies into liquidation. The Treasury Department doesn't see this as a viable option for the U.S. economy, and has vowed to step in where Congress failed. "Because Congress failed to act, we will stand ready to prevent an imminent failure until Congress reconvenes and acts to address the long-term viability of the [auto] industry," The Department of the Treasury said in a statement Friday morning. The emergency funding will likely come from the $700 billion already set aside for TARP funds. The Department of the Treasury has yet to announce how much funding the Big Three will receive, but look for the amount to at least equal the $15 billion Chrysler and GM have requested. Terms of the funding are also unknown at this time. A

8 Vote(s)

Somewhere between renting a car and borrowing a car, car sharing promises the benefits of car ownership with fewer hassles and expenses. With car sharing, you can reserve a car online, pick it up locally, access it by waving a smart card across the windshield, and pay by the hour (rather than by the day or the week). Besides the obvious appeal of renting a car for only as long as you need it, car sharing makes sense on several other levels. The membership fee fosters a sense of community that clients don't get from patronizing Avis or Alamo. Also, in densely populated urban centers and on college campuses, it has allowed some consumers to postpone or forgo buying a car. "The economic component of car sharing is quite powerful," says Susan Shaheen, research director of the Transportation Sustainability Research Center. "It also comes with social and environmental benefits." Indeed, there's a strong green element to car sharing.
Although gas is now well below the $2 mark across most of the country, large SUV sales are still far below 2007 sales levels. Because of that fact, along with looming CAFE regulations, Nissan is reportedly mulling the idea of killing its full-size SUV lineup. What do these vehicles have in common (besides slumping sales)? All three are all made at Nissan's production plant in Mississippi. That bit of information is significant because Nissan plans on using its Mississippi plant for production of its new commercial vehicle, the NV2500. Nissan's commercial fleet will soon grow to three vehicles, meaning the Mississippi plant will likely be converted to commercial-only production. However, the writing was probably already on the wall for the Armada and QX56 as both vehicles are based on Nissan's Titan pickup truck. The Titian will switch over to the Dodge Ram's architecture early next decade, leaving both SUVs without a platform. Surfers can take part in the short online questionnaire to reveal which colour Suzuki Alto they are based on a series of choices which best matches the respondent's lifestyle. But that hasn't stopped Bertone from hiring Jason Castriota as its new design director. The first digit designated the series and the second and third the displacement of the engine. Maybe an extra letter would be tacked on, but that was it. Then they started with M this, Z that and X for the SUVs with xDrive all-wheel drive. So now we've got things like the X6 xDrive 35i. Despite claiming it has not been effected by the global economic crisis, Ferrari has announced plans to cull around ten percent of its workforce, some 300 employees, as a result of slowing sales and a gradually increasing stockpile of inventory. This announcement follows Ferrari’s recent reports that November sales figures had dropped from around 600 units to an alarmingly-low 92 units sold worldwide. A 20-day holiday has been scheduled for the Christmas period this year, a first in Ferrari’s history, which is aimed at bringing stock levels back in line with current demand. Ferrari has rejected implications that it too may be feeling the strain from the global economic fallout, explaining that this is traditionally a slow time of year. Enthusiast favorites -- such as 1960s Pontiac GTOs, 1940 Fords and 1957 Chevys -- are commanding prices 50 percent below what they fetched several years ago, brokers and auction houses say. In October, with the stock market doing another swan song and economic angst running high, auction giant Barrett-Jackson staged its first ever collector car sale in Las Vegas. Codemasters, however, is working with in-game ad firm Engage to take video game advertising to a new level by including a fully functioning eBay Motors marketplace in the developer's next racing title, Race Driver: Grid. Players in the game will actually buy and sell in-game vehicles using the eBay Motors service just like they would in real life. eBay Motors will also get a title race in the game called "The eBay Motors Mustang Muscle Series" in which they can drive the eBay Motors Mustang GTR concept car in San Francisco, Long Beach, Washington D.C. This type of next-gen in-game advertising should work well within the confines of Grid, since eBay Motors is widely visited and used by the type of person who might pick up the game.
